Several
months ago, Steve Barson of Navitron Ltd approached Michael
Eavis, founder of Glastonbury offering to put on the world's
largest solar-powered shower facility ever attempted, at
Glastonbury. We are aiming to deliver 8000 litres of water per
day, giving a total of 40 000 litres of water, or at least 5000
showers over the course of the festival. The water will be
heated by 16 Navitron vacuum tube panels, consisting of 320
individual vacuum tubes, which should deliver over 1000kWh of
solar energy throughout the event.
This will be the largest
solar powered
mobile shower facility ever attempted, and is 100% funded by
Navitron Ltd. The showers will be unveiled at Glastonbury on
20th June 2007. The showers are expected to provide 8000litres
of hot water each day for showering, with an estimated solar
input of over 1000kWh of solar-powered heat - saving the emission
of over 500kg of CO2 (over 250 000 litres of CO2).
Even with the overcast conditions often experienced at
Glastonbury, we will still expect to
generate copious volumes of hot water, using the advanced vacuum
tube solar technology.
The Glastonbury solar powered showers
are currently being assembled at Navitron's warehouse in Oakham,
in preparation for the event. If you miss Glastonbury, you
should also be able to see the showers at the Big Green
Gathering later in the year.

Shower Cubicles
under construction alongside the giant articulated trailer which
will be used to house over 12 tons of hot water during the
event. The showers cubicles should provide some luxury to
festival showering - good quality cubicles, resin-bonded shower
trays and decking will give the feel of a real home shower. Of
course, the showers will be enclosed at Glastonbury, affording
privacy from all except the Press Helicopters!

Multiple 1000 litre storage vessels are located high up in the
trailer on strong steel supports, providing the water head
necessary for the showers. Solar panels being assembled ready
for installation - the plan is to have two banks of panels one
inside the trailer and the other on the ground alongside the
trailer.

All of the water tanks are now in place. The insulated tanks are
for hot water and the uninsulated tanks are for cold water. The
showers are fitted with mixers.
