You're never too young
to start thinking about the environment.. as Georgia finds out!

The first sign of the summer
weather, bringing us hot sunny days is a perfect excuse for an 8
Month Old to get out the paddling pool. Even though she is still
technically '0' years old, Georgia realises that everything she
does has an impact on the environment. Typically, children have
a much stronger environmental conscience than adults, and
Georgia decided it would be a good idea to set an example to the
grown-ups.
Georgia enjoys lovely warm water
from an integral tank solar collector. These are even less
expensive than the usual units used to heat domestic
hot
water in the UK, due to their simpler design (but not quite so
good for the UK's winter climate). The integral tank collector
uses the same double walled vacuum tubes, but water is allowed
to fill the inner section of the tube (just like a thermos
flask), and when heated by the sun, the water's density reduces,
which makes it rise, displacing colder water from the integral
tank into the tube, this thermo-convection causes the water in
the integral storage tank to become heated - on a sunny day, it
can easily reach 100C, so you will need to mix in cold water to
make sure it is not too hot.
Georgia's cousin Billy arrives with
his paddling pool, so they soon get it i nflated
and filled with water. The pool water is heated entirely by
sunshine so there is no carbon-emission penalty. That makes
Georgia feels good.
You can see Georgia's large
140litre capacity solar collector in the background behind the
paddling pool - this contains enough water for several pools -
so it lasts for weeks before it needs to be refilled. However,
they are available in smaller sizes for paddling pool use!
The best thing about having plenty
of solar-heated water available is that you can the water
deeper, and it can easily be topped up whenever it starts to go
cold! Georgia and Billy play all afternoon, until the sun starts
to set and it is time to think about going to bed.
So remember, however old you are,
you can still do your part to help protect the environment!
